Using AI at Work Does Not Mean You Understand It

Many agile practitioners use ChatGPT at work. That does not mean they understand AI well enough to trust your own judgment. The problem is not that agile practitioners ignore AI. The problem is that many already use it confidently without knowing where their judgment breaks down. The free AI4Agile Foundational Assessment measures precisely this skill gap. (Download your access file below.)

The assessment comprises 40 scenario-based questions. . It does not ask for definitions, but puts you into situations that agile coaches, product managers, and Scrum Masters face every week: weak prompting producing generic output, misleading data analysis, questionable agent output, and, possibly, organizational pressure to treat AI output as “good enough” to go with it.

Most people who use AI do not fail because they lack knowledge, but because they cannot distinguish between plausible outputs and trustworthy judgment. But see for yourself!

What the First 30 Participants Showed

The assessment has been live for a short time. Here is what the first 30 participants from the AI4Agile Online Course showed: the average score on their best attempt was 75%. The pass rate was 57%. That means 43% failed, even after some of them retried. Scores ranged from 23% to 93%.

These are not people who walked in cold. They had context, motivation, and time. The assessment still caught them.

What the AI4Agile Foundational Assessment Measures

40 questions drawn from a pool of 100-plus AI for Agile scenarios. About 40 minutes; 80% to pass. Apply practical judgment across four domains, and earn a verified certificate through Accredible upon passing:

  • Fundamentals. Can you tell when a model’s output is reliable and when it is confident noise? Can you recognize the difference between pattern matching and causal reasoning in a, say, Sprint Review context?
  • Prompt engineering. Can you diagnose why a prompt produced generic output instead of a draft for a targeted intervention? The questions put you in real scenarios where “good enough” prompting leads to plausible but useless results.
  • Data analysis. Can you use AI to analyze customer support tickets, Retrospective data, and stakeholder interviews without presenting mere pattern recognition as validated insight?
  • Risk, ethics, and organizational change. Can you spot where the “obvious” AI-assisted decision is the wrong one? (So far, this section has had the lowest pass rate in testing because it requires judgment about privacy, accountability, and the organizational dynamics that kill AI adoption. Of course, it is helpful to understand when AI is fit for what level of delegation.)

Conclusion: Why the AI4Agile Foundational Assessment Is Free

The assessment is free because the profession has a false-confidence problem. Too many practitioners are already advising teams on AI adoption without a reliable baseline for what good judgment looks like. I would rather give this away and raise the floor than keep it behind a paywall where it reaches fewer people.

The AI4Agile Foundational Certificate is not a framework certification. It is a practical judgment benchmark for using AI in agile work. Passing proves you can evaluate AI output critically, write prompts that produce specific results, analyze data without fooling yourself, and navigate the organizational dynamics that derail AI adoption. That is a baseline, not mastery.

If you do not pass, you get something more useful than a certificate: a clear signal about which domains need work before you advise others with confidence.

Do not study to pass the assessment. Instead, use the judgment you rely on in your daily work. That is what the assessment measures. If you fail, act accordingly; now you understand where to take your skill set next.
